The Zhangbei Flexible DC Project is a flexible DC grid project that includes the construction of four ±500kV flexible DC converter stations in Zhangbei, Kangbao, Fengning (regulation side), and Beijing (receiving end), with an additional capacity of 9 million kilowatts. It also includes the construction of a 648.2-kilometer overhead flexible DC ring network line connecting Zhangbei, Kangbao, Fengning, and Beijing. The dynamic investment of the project is 12.64 billion yuan. It was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission on December 14, 2017 and was fully completed and put into operation from the end of 2019 to the first half of 2020. The project has been listed in the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan for Power Development (2016-2020)" and "Energy Technology Revolution Innovation Action Plan (2016-2030)" by the National Development and Reform Commission, and has been recommended by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology as a major landmark project in the "Made in China 2025" plan in 2018.
